Helen, Georgia, cradled in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Chattahoochee River, is
a re-creation of a Bavarian alpine village, complete with cobblestone alleys and old-world
architecture. Early settlers came to mine for gold and work in the thriving lumber
industry, but things have changed. Helen now boasts more than 200 specialty and import
shops offering everything from blown-glass items to homemade quilts. Nearby is Unicoi
State Park's hiking and biking trails, plus boating and swimming on Unicoi Lake. Or
the vacationer can just lazily tube through town on the gently flowing Chattahoochee.
